Why does the Photos application duplicate…
I use icloud storage. Theoretically, it should synchronize all the photos from all my devices. It appears to do so.
However, when I connect my phone to my mac, photos detects thousands of "new photos" and wants to import them. This creates many duplicates. So why does it detect the photos as "new" when they are not new? Seems like a bug.
Answer:
Tell Apple about the problem via Feedback - Photos - Apple
Answer:
Followup question: how do I easily detect and delete thousands of duplicates in Photos?
Answer:
Hi
This problem normally comes when the files are changed in some way as they are transferred to the Mac. Often the result of using different methods of transferring the files (EG texting / direct connection / photostream / iCloud). Pick one method of transfer from phone to Mac, and stick with it. Don't mix them.
Different versions of IOS can also impact this EG when photos are converted from HEIC to JPG. Iphone setting photos>transfer to mac or pc - set to automatic might convert the files. Try setting this to "keep originals". The phone will then send the files in the original HEIC format instead of JPG. (This is the most likely cause, and the easiest one to check for). However you'll still have duplicates on your mac in jpg format which you could choose to delete from the imports folder (if you are sure you still have the originals on your phone)
Another cause can be when iCloud photos is enabled on the phone with "Optimise phone storage" set. If iCloud re-downloads an image that has been optimised, that can result in it being seen as a new image. Even worse, any photo uploaded from your mac to iCloud, then downloaded to the phone with iCloud can be seen as a new image when synced via USB. Best solution; DON'T mix iCloud sync with USB sync.
Photostream is also being phased out, and hasn't been improved for some time resulting in an inability to work with some file types.
Images will only be recognised as the same image if the file being compared on your mac is exactly the same as the one on your phone. Same file name and type, same size, same metadata etc.
By far the easiest way to manage photos is by using iCloud sync, but that does have a monthly cost.
Answer:
There are no facilities in photos to automate finding and deleting duplicates, so either
* manually,
* or using an app designed to work with the photos library (Ie one that marks the photos or puts them in an album, and lets you review and then delete them, rather than doing the delete itself.
Do NOT use a general file duplicate finder not designed to work with the photos library. They will damage your photos library and likely cause loss of your photos.
I personally use PowerPhotos (I also use this for copying images and data between libraries) https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/
Another suitable app recommended by experts here is PhotoSweeper (I have no personal experience of this one)
Both are paid apps. PhotoSweeper is the lowest cost and can recognise duplicates based on content, but PowerPhotos provides a lot of functionality in addition to the duplicate detection.
Answer:
I use iCloud sync, and use optimize phone storage. And I see the duplicates when connecting to USB. Cloud sync is slow, so sometimes I connect via USB to try to make it be faster, but looks like that will cause the duplicates.
I will just keep using cloud sync and put up with the slowness until I switch to some other photo service.
Answer:
If you have the iCloud Library enabled on your mobile device and on your Mac connecting the two with iPhone's USB cable and importer is the cause of duplication. Regardless if they are the same photo.
If you're unhappy with the speed of the iCloud library syncing don't use it and manually download and import new photos on a schedule of your making.
Answer:
@ old toad, yes I'm unhappy with the net result. Apple should fix it, its an obvious bug, annoying, and should be easy to fix.

Tough to tell, Apple is now hiding more & more from us, but...
Have you emptied the trash lately?
Look for iOS backups…
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
OmniDiskSweeper shows you the files on your drive, largest to smallest, and lets you quickly Trash or open them.
https://www.omnigroup.com/more/
Purging local backups
Please note that although this doesn't affect your remote backup from Time Machine, this will get rid of the redundancy (at least until the next Time Machine backup) that a local backup disk will provide. If you need such redundancy or are worried about the recovery of your data then you would be best served to let macOS determine when to purge these files.
Start Terminal from spotlight.
At the terminal type tmutil listlocalsnapshotdates.
Hit enter.
Here, you'll now see a list of all of the locally stored Time Machine backup snapshots stored on your disk.
Next you can remove the snapshots based on their date. I prefer to delete them one at at time. Once my "System" disk usage is at an acceptable level, I stop deleting but you can delete all of them if you want to reclaim all of the disk space.
Back at the terminal, type tmutil deletelocalsnapshots YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS , where will be one of the dates from your backup. This will be in the form of xxx-yy-zz-abcdef. Try to start with the oldest snapshot.
Hit enter.
Repeat for as many snapshot dates as required

tmutil deletelocalsnapshots / # deletes all the snapshots

Tried to update my laptop to big sur and keeps getting stuck on less than a minute remaining. I've tried restarting it with safe mode, recovery mode and reset NVRAM. Recovery mode just stayed on a black screen and the other 2 took me back to the less than a minute remaining screen once I logged in.
I have also been having other issues as for months my Mac has been running slowly and the fan only goes off when I close the laptop. It also does not charge when I plug it into the charger it says it's charging but the percentage does not change and there is no light on the actual charger.

Hey there!
There are several reasons why you'd want to remove "Find My Device". Since your phone is not working, let's go over how to remove "Find My Device" from a web browser.
- Open your web browser
- Go to www.icloud.com/find
- Sign into your AppleID. If it asks you to verify your identity, refresh the page and try again.
- Go to "All Devices" at the top of the screen.
- Select the device you want to disable "Find My Device" on.
- Select "Remove from account"
- Now you're done!
Please keep in mind that your phone cannot be connected to the Internet for this to work. If it is, try to leave the WiFi zone, and/or take out the SIM card.
Hope this helped!

'Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch' is a security feature that's designed to prevent anyone else from using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, if it's ever lost or stolen. To learn more click here --> http://support.apple.com/HT201365
For an individual to remove an activation lock absolutely requires the information for the account that applied the lock. Click on this link to learn 'How to remove Activation Lock' --> https://support.apple.com/HT201441
If you do not know the required information and you are not the original owner, get the owner of the account to remove the lock or return the device for a refund or recycle it. The device is otherwise useless to you. If the owner is unknown and has not provided contact information as a message showing in the login screen, there is no way to contact the owner unless the person who gave you the device knows them.

Reset device:
Apple can completely reset a device if a person can provide sufficient evidence of valid ownership. Do this online at: Activation Lock support request - https://al-support.apple.com/#/additional-support Apple says, "Proof of ownership documentation is required," but does provide details as to what is acceptable proof. Prior to this new online service Apple typically required the original receipt issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller and documented provenance (so typically it would be the original owner who does this, or a descendant with legal proof of ownership).

PS4 controller staying on the Batteries W…
I have a problem with the batteries widget since updating to ios15 where the controller, when plugged in or via Bluetooth adds more controllers icons to the widget but then after removing the device by disconnecting, the icons continue to stay in the widget. The only way to clear it is by restarting the iPad.
Is this happening for anyone else?
Answer:
After ANY iOS/iPadOS upgrade/update, you should ALWAYS perform a simple hard reset of your Apple mobile device.
For older iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.
OR
For much newer, larger screen iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset procedure for the new 2018/2020/2021 iPad Pros and the 2020 iPad Air 4 models.
1. Press and release the volume up button.
2. Then immediately press and release the volume down button.
3. Then, press and hold the single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.
Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018 iPad Pro will boot up completely to the iPad Pro's Lock screen.
Best of Luck to You!

I'm sorry to necro this, but this answer isn't helpful to the described problem imho.
The problem is that since ios 15, the Dualshock 4 Controller will be in your Batteries widget until you restart the iPad or the iPhone on which this problem is also. No matter how often you restart, once you connect your gamepad again, it will be in the widget until you restart the device. Is there a solution to that that's not permanently rebooting the device?

iPad (USB-C) won't charge on USB hubs aft…
This is not a typical question but a rather interesting observation. It's one of those obscure bugs/issues that I don't know how to report to Apple and their support hotline likely won't be of any help because resetting/restoring is not a solution.
Anyway, I have the following setup
- iPad Air 4th generation
- Connected via Amazon Basic USB-A to USB-C cable to a powered USB 3 hub
- USB 3 hub connected to iMac (5K, 27", 2020)
The iMac is on Big Sur 11.6.
The iPad runs 24x7 with LunaDisplay App as my teleprompter setup. It's always connected and the setup (was) running flawlessly.
After updating the iPad to iOS 15 it just stopped charging. It's still connected. After re-connecting the cable it does charge for half a second and then show "NOT CHARGING" at the top next to the battery icon.
At first I thought the iOS updated started blocking the cable. I started playing around and discovered the cable is fine. It started to work again when I connect the iPad to the iMac directly (not via the hub). Luckily I had one last free USB-A port on the iMac. But this is crazy. Why would it stop charing on a powered USB-A hub?
Sounds like a bug or intentional. 😞
FWIW, I tried different cables and different hubs (I have three in total) - same result. All cables work nicely when they connect the iMac (USB-A) directly with the iPad (USB-C). But none of the hubs works.
Answer:
Thanks for the interesting post.
Q: Have you tried a full power-off and restart of your device since updating to iOS 15?
Answer:
Yes. Reset and full power cycle. Did not help. I suspect it's something in iOS that's blocking it.
