Duplicates on Photos?
How can I quickly delete duplicate photos?
Answer:
What kind of duplicates do you have in your library?
Photos is checking for duplicates, when you are importing photos. It should not be possible to have identical image files in your Photos Library, unless you are ignoring the warning about duplicate files on import, or are mixing different methods of import, so the duplicate detection will be disabled.
To avoid duplicates, do not use two different kinds of importing. You will get duplicates, if you import manually via USB from an iPhone or iPad and have iCloud Photos or My Photo Stream enabled it the same time.
Or if you are downloading photos from an iPhone or iPad and converting the photos to JPEGs during the import, The converted photos cannot be recognised as duplicates.
It will help to find out what has created the duplicates and to avoid it in future. And knowing the kind of duplicates will help find them with smart albums.
Photos has no tool to show us duplicate photos. We have to find them on our on, for example in the All Photos view they will appear side-by-side. You could use a third-party app like PowerPhotos to point out duplicates, but you will still have to pick the keepers on your own. No app can decide for you reliably which of two similar photos you want to keep. If one of the photos has been added to a project or album, you will want to keep the photo in the album. If one photo has been edited or has new metadata assigned, you will want to copy the metadata to the edited version and delete the other photo. If the duplicates are having a different resolution, you will want to keep the photo with the best resolution.
And if the apparent duplicates are two shots taken in quick succession, you will have to judge the quality. Keep the photo with the best exposure or best colour or the version with the best composition, the balance of the objects in the photo.
I am using duplicate detectors to find potential duplicates, but I am always selecting the keepers on my own.
Some automatic duplicate detectors may even damage the Photos Library, if we let them delete the duplicates automatically. Apple is warning against them: Using third-party apps to remove duplicate photos might damage your Photos for macOS library - Apple Support
There is no way to repair the damage done by duplicate detectors, that are modifying the library automatically, without using the program interface of Photos.

Answer:
Greetings, weintrauba.
It sounds like you are having some issues with pop ups.
"Pop-ups can be ads, notices, offers, or alerts that open in your current browser window, in a new window, or in another tab. Some pop-ups are third-party ads that use phishing tactics—like warnings or prizes—to trick you into believing they're from Apple or another trusted company, so you'll share personal or financial information. Or they might claim to offer free downloads, software updates, or plugins, to try to trick you into installing unwanted software.
Unless you're confident of an ad's legitimacy, you should avoid interacting with pop-ups or webpages that seem to take over your screen. Here are additional tips that can help you manage pop-ups and other unwanted interruptions.

Check and update your software
Always make sure you install the latest software updates for all your Apple products. Many software releases have important security updates and may include improvements that help control pop-ups.
The safest place to download apps for your Mac is the App Store. If you need third-party software for your Mac, and it isn't available in the App Store, get it directly from the developer or another reliable source, rather than through an ad or link.

Check Safari settings and security preferences
Make sure Safari security settings are turned on, particularly Block Pop-ups—for pop-up windows—and the Fraudulent Website Warning.
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Safari and turn on Block Pop-ups and Fraudulent Website Warning.
On your Mac, you can find these options in Safari > Preferences. The Websites tab includes options to block some or all pop-up windows, and you can turn on fraudulent site warnings in the Security tab.

Pop-ups and ads in Safari
If you see an annoying pop-up ad in Safari, you can go to the Search field and enter a new URL or search term to browse to a new site. If you don't see the Search field on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap the top of the screen to make it appear.
Some pop-ups and ads have fake buttons that resemble the close button, so use caution if you try to close a pop-up or ad. If you're unsure, avoid interacting with the pop-up or ad and close the Safari window or tab.
On your Mac, you can also update your settings to prevent windows from opening again after you close Safari, or just press and hold the Shift key when you open Safari.

If you might have installed adware or other unwanted software on your Mac
If you see pop-ups on your Mac that just won't go away, you might have inadvertently downloaded and installed adware (advertising-supported software) or other unwanted software. Certain third-party download sites might include programs that you don't want with the software that you install.
If you think that you might have malware or adware on your Mac, update to the latest version of macOS. If your Mac is already running the latest version, restart it. macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when you restart your Mac.
Check your Applications folder to see if you have any apps that you didn't expect and uninstall them. You can also check the Extensions tab in Safari preferences to check if you installed any unnecessary extensions that you'd prefer to turn off. If you continue to see advertising or other unwanted programs on your Mac, contact Apple." About pop-up ads and windows in Safari
We hope this helps!
Sincerely.

Hi, I have some problems using my BR reader/burner on my new macBook 16".
It shows up in apple profiler (under the USB tree), but it just keeps spinning without showing up as a burning device. Everything works fine in my 4 YO macbook pro.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
Answer:
Is it connected directly to the laptop?
Does this drive use a USB-A cable & connector to connect to the Mac?
Are you using any USB adapters or hubs to connect it to the laptop? If so, maybe the adapter is not compatible (or the cable).
Does this drive require extra power to operate? Some drives may ship with a dual USB cable to allow connecting it two ports on the computer to receive extra power. You can try using a powered USB3 hub to supply extra power, but make sure it is a good reliable brand.
Try using another port on the laptop especially on the other side of the laptop.
There have been reports that macOS 12.x Monterey has some compatibility issues with some external devices. Make sure macOS is completely up to date since macOS 12.1 did fix some of those issues.
There have also been reports of M1 Macs not being compatible with some peripherals regardless of the OS being used. I have personally experienced this myself where a device failed to work on my M1 Mac running Big Sur, while the device worked perfectly fine on a USB-C Intel Mac also running Big Sur.
Sometimes some third party drivers interfere with other external devices. Wacom tablets are one such example. Some users have reported disconnecting a Wacom tablet and connecting the other device will allow the other device to work. Reconnecting the Wacom tablet, then allows both the Wacom tablet and the other device to both work. So try disconnecting all other external devices in case one of them is interfering. Also try booting into Safe Mode which will disable third party drivers which may be interfering.

Will a new iMac recognize an old keyboard?
I am awaiting delivery of a new 24" iMac. It will replace my current 21.5" Late 2012 iMac.
Will my existing keyboard Model A1243 work with the new 24" iMac?
Note: The new keyboard does NOT have a numeric keypad whereas my existing keyboard DOES have a numeric keypad. I realize that using my old keyboard I will give up touch ID and would need a USB adaptor to connect the old keyboard. I also realize a new keyboard with numeric keypad can be purchased separately.
Thanks

My 2nd LG Monitor doesn't support brightn…
Hello all,
I currently have a MacBook Pro 14 with the M1 Max and 64 GB of memory. When at home, it's connected to a CalDigit 3 dock running to two daisy chained LG 24-inch 4k UHD Apple supported displays. They're the displays with no controls on them because everything is controlled through macOS.
They're fantastic displays, but after the most recent update to 12.3.1 macOS no longer lets me control the brightness on one of the displays. Additionally, one of the displays shows up in the speaker menu but the other one just says "Speaker" when the system used to recognize them as two separate devices. I've included screenshots for reference.
Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance :)
Answer:
Greetings ChadKirchner,
It sounds like you having some issues with your external displays. We know how important having working external displays is for you, and you're in the right place to find a resolution.
Can you please let us know how the external displays are connected to your MacBook Pro? Are they both using Thunderbolt 4 connections? Have you tried swapping the cables? Have you tried any additional cables? This will help us understand more about what is going on.
Cheers!

Automator
I want to automate certain text entries when completing forms in Safari. I'm attempting to use Automator. I've created the script. Parts of the script work (asking for input related to data that changes within the general text) but nothing prints to the page. Is there anyone who can help me develop this and other scripts so I can cut out one of the tedium and improve my workflow?
Answer:
Without seeing your script there's no way to debug what's going wrong.
A couple of points to consider:
- Automator is generally great at linear processing. It's less good at running loops and anything that requires logic processing (if/then, etc.)
- Interacting with the page (e.g. filling form elements) is generally best handled via JavaScript, the de facto way of interacting with web content. Are you using Javascript to do this? or are you trying to get Automator to 'type' the text.

iPad screen saturation
My iPad has suddenly changed to garish colour saturation on games and photos. Changing the brightness makes it worse. How can I change it back to normal.?
Photos on the iCloud have become grainy and tooo colourful, as well as the screen colours. Text is ok
Answer:
Try triple clicking your Home button.
Answer:
If the screen colours appear to be distorted or unnatural, you need to check some key Accessibility settings that are intended to compensate for specific colour-vision issues:
Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size
Ensure that all settings enclosed within the red box above are switched OFF/Disabled.
Otherwise, depending upon your installed version of iOS/iPadOS, you'll need to look at your Dark Mode settings:
Settings > Display & Brightness > [Appearance]
Answer:
Thank you,
All accessibility display settings are off.
Also, in Display & Brightness I switch the appearance from dark to light back and forth, but this did not effect the saturation.
